Government directs ZESCO to adhere to 7-Hour power supply!
Energy Minister Makozo Chikote has instructed ZESCO to strictly follow the seven-hour electricity load management schedule across Zambia to minimize disruptions to households, businesses, and essential services.
The directive was issued during a meeting with ZESCO’s leadership, the ZESCO Board Chairperson, the Director General of the Energy Regulation Board (ERB), the Rural Electrification Authority (REA), and Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary for Electricity, Arnold Simwaba.
Chikote emphasized the need for strict compliance with the schedule and better communication with consumers, warning ZESCO management against any service lapses. He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving the electricity supply, including investing in alternative energy sources and infrastructure development.
Chikote also cautioned against political interference, stressing that decisions should be based on technical expertise and the national interest. He urged transparency, efficiency, and accountability from ZESCO.
The minister directed ZESCO to add 1,000 MW to the national grid by year-end to improve energy security and support Zambia’s growing economy, in line with President Hakainde Hichilema’s guidance. To address the current deficit, ZESCO is to continue importing electricity from regional partners.
Chikote further stressed the importance of uninterrupted power to key security institutions, warning ZESCO not to cut power to facilities critical to national security.
